AP Studio Art: Semester 1 Concentration Pieces

The AP Studio Art students have been working incredibly hard this semester. They have created 8 artworks on a single theme.

Aditee

I love to go to places, so this obviously involves a lot of traveling. There are many peculiar and interesting things that you see on the road. My aim is to capture such things whenever I can. I want to show what I see on the roads and streets rather than showing them as places with traffic and pollution. Even though my main aim is to point out a different perspective, there are a few pictures which transport me to another place and have nothing to do with the real world, such as "Yellow Dragons." This photograph reminds me of something majestic and dominating. These taxis rule the roads of Calcutta like a ferocious dragon. All my other pieces have an underlying meaning as well.

"Skeletons" is about how the planet Earth is suffering because of human action. In the picture "Life Waits For No One," a woman on a scooter warns the men that women are no longer objects of desire but people who deserves equal respect like men. By taking pictures I want to point out such issues of "Life On the Streets," the title of my concentration.

Akriti

Mental issues have always interested me mainly because of their dealings with the human mind; something that has always mystified as well as intrigued me. The problems that people face and the ordeals they have to overcome usually add to their mental well-being and I would like to depict all of these struggles in my concentration. Mental issues and psychological dilemmas are something that can be interpreted by an individual's perspective and I would like to depict my version and ideas on these phenomena. My interest mainly lies in psychology as well as other matters of the mind. Hence, making this my concentration is ideal for a person like me.

My concentration is focused on personal memories from various times in my life. Moments are fleeting, and our memories are often the only reminder we have to keep. Although my concentration is called “Black & White Memories”, I always have one element in each piece that has color. The color serves to highlight parts of my subjective memory that stands out. I combine both drawings and photographs in my concentration. This combination helps me to portray memory in all its variations.

I chose music as my central theme because I love how music unites everyone and brings people together as a single being. I personally like music because it makes me happy and relaxes me from my stress and work. One thing about music which absolutely amazes me, is its power to persuade, convince and change people’s thoughts and ideas. I plan to connect the worldly boredom which all of us feel with music and create a fusion for my art works. For me, music has no limitations or boundaries, and I wish to portray this freedom in my pieces.

Hyeeun

My concentration is focused on disguise. This includes anything that hides faces such as masks. My concentration pieces change from being realistic to abstract. Colorful patterns are added in order to make these images more abstract. This shows how people try to hide themselves which further accentuates in never showing the real side of them.

Luniva

My concentration focuses on the diverse potential outcomes of Buddhism. With my pieces I explore the various ways in which this religion would shape itself in the obscure future. Would Buddhists adapt to the drastic situations of the world or would they be driven to the edges to survive even in the most severe settings? When modern technology intensifies to an entirely new level and when culture and religion no longer rule the lives of the people what would the world look like? The aim of my concentration would be to focus on how my religion, Buddhism, would transform or adapt in the technologically dominated future.

Nayung

My concentration is based on the culture of Nagaland, a small state in India which is my home. The culture and diversity between different tribes intrigues me and I want to show it through my pieces. The medium used for my art are mostly watercolor, acrylic, charcoal and ink. There aren't many people who know about Nagaland, and if they do it is a very stereotyped view that is portrayed in the rest of India, such as images of headhunting and eating everything that moves. I want to show the unique aspects of the culture, such as the strength of both masculine and feminine roles, the spiritual life of rituals and the decorative forms that are part of this rich culture. All of these aspects help form my identity as I venture out in the larger world.

Rahul

The topic for my concentration is surreal juxtaposition. All my paintings have topics and metaphors of their own but are united by the fact that they share a human character interacting in a surreal setting. The latter half of my works are all done in the Japanese “super flat” style and are all illustrations of sentences scribbled onto the artwork itself. I use personal symbols and imagined characters throughout the work, at times repeating these symbols to create my own iconography.

Rignor

Having spent the last ten years in this school, I would say that I know a great deal about Woodstock. It is a school that is orientated around academics, but its true identity lies in the departments of music and art. Being a Woodstocker, my passion lies in these two fields also, and so this concentration has given me the opportunity to merge them into one large spectrum that aims to define the significance of the word Woodstock. It is my school, and the spirit of the students. But it is also music, and the festival. My pieces aim to contrast and blend the two spaces in time that are poles apart but somehow parallel in their sense of community.

Calmness is a word that has one definition when looked at by the general population, yet has several meanings when looked at by an individual. Calmness has several definitions when looked at from different perspectives and I choose this topic to explore how one can find calmness out of anything, even the most mundane or desolate thing by trying to switch perspectives. An example would be seeing a nuclear fallout as silence enveloping the world as human technology stops eating up nature. I hope to show the calmer outlook in my artwork, even though at first glance they may not seem so.

The few pieces which won't appear calm at first glance comes from my exposure to video games. I have been playing various genres of video games with different art styles and themes, which all had one thing in common: calmness. It seemed like a far-fetched idea to find calmness in video games, but I found that by trying to find calmness in any situations even from someone else's perspective, one will always find it (calmness).

The pieces I make will mostly take on an unconventional perspective. Like Hitler getting calmness out of the holocaust while the World cringes. However, there will be a few traditional calm pieces like a nice scenery. I chose this topic out of a need to challenge my creativity, and to find the simple calmness embedded within almost anything.

I chose my concentration theme as the modern city life as we all have experienced it, and how all the busy people, city lights, late nights and the pollution and the rush kind of amazes me. As i love lights, the complication of traffic and all the things that are consequential in the cities, I will work on artworks compiling them. I also want to show the bad part of it, how people have forgotten about other many important things such as religion, environment and their ethics. So I basically want to show how this modern world is and also how it has its positive and negative aspects.

My concentration focuses on the pattern. This includes same objects repeating and mixed up. I started with pieces that's more realistic; objects that people can easily tell what it is. But starting in the middle I started to make more abstract such as one object's parts mixed up, so people have to find out what is the object.

Tanya

a·nach·ro·nism : The representation of someone as existing or something as happening in other than chronological, proper, or historical order. For my concentration theme, I chose anachronism, which simply defined, means something that is out of the time. For me, art should be timeless, therefore by juxtaposing objects and situations from another time to a contrasting one, I think I can achieve a body of work that is humourous, bold and innovative. I plan to experiment with colors, art styles and art subjects with a central theme that combines the past and the present, the old and the new.

Tina

The central idea of my concentration focuses on emotions and feelings in faces depicted through black and white photography. I feel that faces are artistic in themselves as they come in all shapes and sizes, uniquely portraying their own emotions and feelings. I chose black and white as a medium because the simplicity, grace and refinement of it aids in accentuating the true meaning and sentiment that I wish to render in my pictures. By using sepia and cyan tints in my photo editing, I hope to create a nostalgic mood in the work. I am exploring the many subtleties of what a “face” is considered in both human and non-human faces.

The unique properties of glass can express rather different perspectives. Glass is at one angle transparent allowing human eyes to see through it, but at another angle it can reflect the light or shape of any other objects. Sometimes it is even capable of distorting images, for example a person's face looking into the glass observed from the opposite side. These properties of transparency, reflection and distortions not only could be used to create visually unique and interesting paintings, but also can be mixed with different ideas and objects in order to show different angles or hidden perspectives of the subjects and thus recreate them.

Zarka

The concentration of my body of work is a single Urdu word- “Mashallah.” In Urdu, when people see something especially beautiful that they hope to protect they say the word “Mashallah” as a prayer to guard it from the evil eye. My portfolio is almost entirely based on the aesthetic and meaning of a single word.Throughout, I have used two different kinds of Urdu calligraphy to capture the different meanings the same word may carry. While some of the work seems rigid and intangible, with no real meaning, other pieces capture the abstract emotions that are associated with the word.Often, the viewer will be able to connect the images with more than one theme or no theme at all.I have tried to work in the same mediums of ink and water color to maintain consistency.I would like to add that my body of work is still building, so the larger theme might not be easily identifiable as yet.

Design: Folk Art Linoleum Prints

The Design Class is participating in an art exchange with Green Farms Academy in Connecticut. For the exchange, the students researched folk art from their own cultures, or cultures they have been influenced by. They created editions of four linoleum prints; three will be sent to Connecticut.

Abhishek M, Grade 10

The folk art I chose was Maharashtran. The symbol was of anelephant, specifically the hindu god Gansesha. Ganesha is popular inMaharashtra because of the religious celebration of Ganesh Chuturthi, thebirthday of the lord Ganesha. This celebration is especially important to thelocals of Maharashtra because of their closeness and appreciation of the lord Ganesha.As you can see, his body is in the form of a human’s body, because only hishead is supposed to be shaped like an elephant’s head. This is because Ganesha’sfather Shiva accidentally cut of Ganesha’s head and promised to put on thefirst head he found. The markings on his forehead symbolize his holiness. Thesymbol is a “tikka”, which is a material that is applied on the forehead of aking during their coronation.

The Bear and swirls aretwo signs taken from Navajo folk art. The bear and the swirls are two symbolsthat represent strength and power to the people who belong to Native America.This piece of art was taken from California, and I chose it because I live inthe Bay Area. I have seen many Native Americans in California, as well as inthe Grand Canyon region. The Navajo people really fascinate me, I love theirart, culture and traditions I find then to be very special. Anything that ismade by a Navajo artist catches my eye immediately; I play the Navajo flute aswell which increases my fascination for them. Therefore I wanted to make adesign based on the Native American culture; I found many interesting picturesand symbols however this stood out to me the most. I think I liked this bestbecause I like the fact it displays strength and power, I wish others can enjoyfinding the unique style in this as much as I do.

My lino-cut art work is from Northern India, from theGharwal region of Uttarakhand. It has traditionally been used to decoratedoorstep of our houses during important festival. It is basically a form ofrangoli, but instead of being made of coloured sand it is made with curd mixedwith sugar. The centre points of the art work are the 2 feet in the middle.They represent that Laxmi, the Goddess of wealth and prosperity, will bringherself inside our homes and bless us.

This print illustrates thetraditional art of Thailand and Buddhism. In this print is one of the mostwell-known Hindu/Buddhist God, Ganesh, who has human-like body andelephant-like head. This is one of the versions of the God; this version, hehas six arms and each holds different objects: an axe, a hammer, a tri-bladeknife, a Harvesting Knife, a rope, and a lotus. Each item represents differentthings in Thai culture; for example, the hammer represents building, the bladerepresents fighting, and lotus represents peace and nature.

Rangoli is a design usedto depict color and joy. It has a lot of floral designs and various textureswhich make it look more attractive. It is built by every Indian family in frontof their house during special occasions with color powder, sand and even flowerpetals. It is a traditional fork art of India. They are meant to act asinvitations to the Indian Gods to come visit the house in front of which theyare built and bless the residents. The custom of building rangoli has beengoing on in India for a very long time. It is also expected to bring good luckto the people who build it. It originated in the ancient Mohen-jo-daro and Harappancivilization. It has a lot of traditional and cultural beliefs attached to itand is an integral part of the Indian culture.

This piece of art mainly concentrates on Hinduism and as Iam from central India this pantheistic religion is practiced among most of thepeople. In the artwork there are these gates on the background just behind thesnakes which have point of view of reincarnation and moksha. To get out of thegates means that one has attained Moksha and is free from reincarnating andgiving themselves to the nature. On the other hand there are these snakes whichLord Shiva has with him when he sits and meditates. Lord Shiva is also known asthe “destroyer” therefore stopping a person from getting Moksha. The “Sun,”which in Hinduism is the creator of all carries out the sign of “Om.” Finallythe dove is a multicultural element in the piece bringing in Christianity andDove meaning “Peace” in the religion.

My prints were based onMadhubani Art, which is from the Mithila region of Bihar. Women around villagesof Madhuban create Madhubani art. Madhubani art is mainly composed of flowers,leaves, women, cows, and other things that are seen around in the madhubanivillages. My print incorporated a woman. The woman has large eyes, which makesher face look very out of proportion, but that is a significant aspect ofmadhubani art. The women in madhubani art usually have large eyes, and aredressed in indian costumes. The literal translation of madhubani is forests ofhoney. Usually Madhubani art works are very colorful, but since we were limitedto black ink, my prints do not consist of any color but black.

This piece called Nagaland represents the state in Indiawhere I am originally from. Located on the North-east part of India, Nagalandis a place full of rich cultures. The bird is supposed to be a Hornbill whichrepresents the national bird of Nagaland. It symbolizes purity and freedom.Hornbills are brightly colored and they are a very diverse species and in thesame way Nagaland culture is also composed of a variety of 16 tribes. Of the 16tribes, my art represents two of the tribes belonging to my parents, Angami andChangki. The spear is of my father’s tribe, Angami. The spear is symbolizes thestatus of the men. The more stripes there are, the higher the status. Theswirls which are part of the bird and the criss-cross designs down in thebottom represent my mother’s tribe, Angami. These designs, taken fromtraditional clothes, represent the status of the women’s husband. They weave their clothes and designsaccording to their status and the village they belong to.

This design comes from theIndian state of Rajasthan. Rajasthani culture is filled with colors andpatterns. While portraying animals the artists have always used floral designsto enhance the beauty of the art work. The bird in this picture is waiting fora companion and therefore has been named solitary. This series of prints havetruly been inspired by the Rajasthani culture as the bird’s wings would not beportrayed as leaves in any other part of the world. Printmaking is a big partof Rajasthani tradition, though it is mainly done on cloth using wooden plates.Rajasthani prints have become world famous. People wearing the traditionalIndian prints can be spotted all around the world. Thus artists all over theworld have adapted these traditional patterns into contemporary art works.Rajasthani artists’ unique way of combining floral patterns with animals willremain evergreen and will continue to inspire several new artists.

The Title of the print isDragen Fra Hopperstad Møter Vikingskiped Fra Begby, Østfold which is Norwegianfor “The dragon from Hopperstad meets the viking-ship from Begby, Ostfold (theunderlined words are actual places). The dragon is actually a tiny decorativestatue located in a rather ‘clever’ place somewhere in “Hopperstad Stavkirke”which is a really old Stave Church in Norway. The viking-ship is actually apainting on a boulder in Ostold, Norway, the painting was made by earlysettlers a long ago. The whole reason as to why this print is so fabulous isthe fact that two completely separate, yet, original pieces of art, becomealive. Why is this print so EXTREMELY special? Well, dragons and viking-shipsare not usually included in the same piece of art (in Norway that is, I don’tknow about anywhere else), at least from what i’ve seen so far.

India is a religiouscountry with lots of meaningful signs and symbols to which people relate. “Om”is a chant that originated in India, but now has become well known world-wide.In the print, Om curves around the figure of Lord Ganesha, son of Lord Shiva(who is believed to be the destroyer of the world). A ‘Trishul’ (literally –three forked) goes through the Om. Trishul is Shiva’s weapon, and representsthe end of all evil. Also, a swastika is enclosed in ‘Om’. Swastika is assumedby many to be same as the Nazi symbol; however, Swastika has been a part of theIndian culture since before the Nazis even came into being. In India, theswastika is seen as a holy symbol, and is often engraved or drawn in front ofhomes so as to invite the Gods, and be showered with good luck. All thesesymbols together represent the Indian culture as a whole.

This print “Korea” is amixture of three different Korean folk and traditional arts focusing on thetradition and culture of Korea. The tiger, located in the center, is a type offolk art. Since the tiger has been associated with Korean foundation mythologyand Korean culture, I located in the center of print in order to point out itssignificance to Korea. The two dolls in each side represent Korean traditionalwedding clothing. The screen containing these three pictures is a traditionalscreen. It is often filled with the pictures of flowers, but to show thecombination of different types of art, the pictures of the tiger and the dollsare added. Ultimately this print is called “Korea” because it coveys cultureand tradition of Korea.

A little bit about Gujarat: It is an Indian state that liesin Western India and this place is basically prone to hazardousearthquakes, despite this fact, itis rich in its exotic culture and is also known for its textile business, forwhich this design was possibly created.

My print is taken from design from the Warli tribe art. TheWarli are tribes that live in the state of Maharashtra in India. They are knownfor very basic and simple art that usually depicts village life. Theirpaintings are usually done on walls. In my print I chose the theme of music anddepicted it using their style. Music is a big part in my life and something Ireally enjoy and I feel it is a gift for all.

Studio 1: Printmaking as a Social Force Part 1

The Studio 1 classes studied how printmaking has been used as a social force to communicate and advocate for change. We looked at examples from the past, such as the Taller de Grafica Popular, as well as contemporary artists, including the Just Seeds cooperative and Luba Lukova. The students chose a social, political, or environmental issue to research and then created a linoleum relief print.

After creating the prints, the students created Photoshop posters.

The issue that my artwork presents is rhino poaching inAfrica, where they are being hunted down in large numbers for their horn andskin. The message that everyone should hear and understand from this piece isthat rhinos should be preserved as they are soon going to become extinctcreatures like dinosaurs and dodo birds. It has already been listed as one ofthe most endangered species. There has been a steady decline in the rhinopopulation of Zimbabwe from 500,000 rhinos in the 20th century to 20,000 at thepresent. This decrease in the rhino population was mainly caused by thepoaching of this animal. If their poaching continues at this rate, soon therewill be no more rhinos left for our future generations to see. Rhino poachingwill also affect the food chain and will create imbalance in its ecosystem. Therhino poaching should be completely banned and this rule should be imposed verystrictly. This will help the rhino population to grow back and prevent thisspecie from getting extinct.

Skateboarding is a famous action sport, which has beentrending a lot and his been a lifestyle for many. It is high flying sport whereyou are riding your skateboard, which is basically a plank of wood attached tofour small wheels. Many people say skateboarding is not a sport but alifestyle, and there are many stereotyped and orthodox people who hateskateboarders and think all of them are useless and jobless punks trying to actcool and destroy things. It is not sure know who were the few rotten apples onthe bag that spoilt the image to people for skateboarding for, beingrebellious, anarchist and spraying graffiti everywhere, which lead to manyplaces in the world to skateboard publicly.

I chose my print work to represent how skateboarding is nota crime and how not the majority of the skateboarders are not hooligans butsome passionate people trying to enjoy and build career out of skateboarding.Skateboarding has been my passion and I wanted to be a skateboarder since achild, but when I said people I wanted to be a skateboarder, people viewed medifferently. They asked me why do you want to be part of those hooligans? Whydo you want to do something illegal, which made me very mad and I always wantedto tell them that Skateboarding is not a crime and that skateboarders are notHooligans.

Bullies are not exactly the biggest, strongest guy in the world. They just think of themselves as really cool. – Tom Felton. For the past few months of my school life, I’ve been hearing lots of this word “Bully”. Before getting into the story, what is bully anyway? The definition of bully is someone who shows aggressive behavior in order to intentionally hurt another person, physically or mentally. Just to make themselves feel superior over one, and to achieve that satisfaction, people bully the person weaker than them.

The roof of the world, Tibet, was invaded by their so called“friendly” neighbor, China, in 1949. This conflict went on for the next 10years as the Tibetans struggled in their own homeland under harsh oppressions.In 1959, China finally took over the country as the spiritual and formerpolitical leader, H.H the 14th Dalai Lama took flight over the Himalayas, andtook refuge in India. Here the Dalai Lama, along with other Tibetans set up theTibetan government in exile which still cries out for an autonomous, democraticstate. After imposing strict control in Tibet, China has restricted anddemolished many traditional beliefs. In the process of conquering the land,China destroyed over 5000 monasteries, taking all the valuable items, such asstatues, back to Beijing, and using the metal for other purposes.

The issue I explored for my artwork is the restraintsTibetans are facing in their own home country. The picture depicts the harshconditions they have to live against and death resulting to one of the manypunishments for disobeying. I think that people should know the strictimplications China has put on Tibet, and how people are refrained from voicingout their opinions. I chose this because I am a Tibetan and this issueexpresses what I think. No one should live in fear of consequences, but do whatthey do because they want to.

America declared a global ‘War on Terror’ in 2001, the yearwhen its World Trade Centers were attacked by Al-Qaeda. Osama Bin Laden, theleader of this organization, who had orchestrated the entire attack waseventually found and killed in 2011, a decade after the attack, proving afteryears of fighting that this war was finally a success. However, was it truly avictory? The costs and casualties of the war have by far masked the benefits of‘winning’ the war. Its negative impact on the portrayal of Muslims and theirreligion have helped to push forward then number of violent acts against the.The ‘War on Terror’ or the Iraq War have not helped America or the rest of theworld in its attempt to combat terrorism, instead they have made themselvesterrorists by the methods that they have chosen to deal with this global issue.

The cost ofthis war was over 4.4 trillion dollars and the death toll, nearly 900,000, fourfifths of them innocent Muslim civilians in Iraq and Afghanistan that are nowbranded as ‘terrorists’. In December 2001, America bombed Afghanistan forallowing the ‘terrorist’ network Al Qaeda to stay there. 3500 people died thatday, more died in one day of the decade long war than in the huge calamity of9/11. Over 6000 American soldiers were killed in the wars fought in Afghanistanand Iraq along with thousands of journalists and academics. The continuousviolent attacks in the two countries have made them two of the most dangerousplaces to live, hazardous for both foreigners and its inhabitants. The war hashurt more innocent civilians than the members of the Al Qaeda

This war, also known as the Global War on Terror, has hadparticipants from all over the world proving its importance and stand againstterrorism. Yet, has this war actually managed to eradicate terrorism from thisworld or even lessen it? Or has it managed to do the exact opposite. The US hasbeen fighting terror with terror, violence with violence and while doing so hasmanaged to achieve nothing at all except the destruction of all.

Female infanticide is still a burning issue in India. Manyof the local people usually in villages, because of their culture feel thatfemale children are a burden on the family and having a boy is a lot morebeneficial. So if they have a female baby they kill it or abort it when theyfind out the sex.The reasons for these atrocities are that females aregenerally less valued in Indiansociety, as a result of the fact that most people still do not view them asbeing capable to become bread-winners, and support families, therefore having amale child is much more desirable, while having a girl is seen as being anunnecessary burden on the family. The negative impact that this is currentlyhaving on India’s population is that there are currently much more men thanwomen in India today, which is leading to a situation in which it ia hard formany young men to find someone to marry. Thus, the rate of rape has also goneup corresponded.

The concept of the poorer people being under the rich people,and wanting to be more like them is what I am trying to portray in thispicture. The skeleton hand in the center is reaching up to a necklace. The handis a skeleton because it depicts the poor people, and the necklace is thesymbol of the rich, who are above the poor people. The hand not being able totouch the necklace is a depiction of being ‘untouchable’ which is a commontheme in India’s class system. The lowest caste people are called theuntouchables, and if anyone touches them, they have to be cleaned with ashesand made ‘pure’ again.

I addressed this matter because I have been influenced bydifferent books that discuss this separation between human beings. Now,that we have come out of the dark ages where racism was spread across the globeand slave trade was a common thing, we still haven’t been able to cut the rootsof this issue completely and thus it is spread across different fields ofsports, work and social life. Asthe citizens of this new modern world, it is our duty to work together and stopracism. After all, we are all equal and should not be bound to discrimination.

Eskom is an electricitysupplier in South Africa that is one of the factories that gives off the mostcarbon dioxide into the atmosphere. The monster crawling out of the chimney ofthe factory is a pollution monster that is slowly “eating” the Earth from thebottom. It is dark and scary, and represents the destruction caused bypollution on our Earth. The plant growing on top of the Earth represents theenvironment and the overall health of our planet. It is young and fresh andneeds a lot of caring and protection to grow into a big, healthy tree. However,the monster is slowly approaching the plant and will soon swallow it if we, theinhabitants of the Earth, don’t do something about it. Overall, the two pieces areto warn people of the danger that we may engulf ourselves in if we do not thinkabout our environment and take actions to save it.

The topic of my print is about how women have started tobreak through the chain of society, men and culture oppression. Men andsociety’s opinions on women have become more liberal, however you can stillnotice some amount of oppression in today’s lifestyle. For example, women arestill not trusted enough to rule or become Presidents in many countries andplaces. However, every once in a while, there are women who break theseprejudice thoughts about women. The courage these women show is remarkable andthis is why they are more remembered than most men. They fight for their rights,dreams, stand grounded for their beliefs, and prove their societies wrong inthat women are strong, smart, clever, courage’s, and they can be someonesuccessful in their lives.

Myprint shows that women will not stand by and just let society and men throughthem around. It shows the growing power of women, there are unique women allover the world but if all women combine their power (which they have starteddoing), then women will rise and break away form oppression. My print is togive hope to these rising women. It is to give them courage. It is to give themstrength. It is to fight against any type of oppression in women.

I chose human trafficking as my theme for my printmakingproject. I chose this theme because I want to remind the people in this worldabout the forbidden activities that takes place mostly in underdevelopedcountries where humans are tricked, sold and transported off somewhere in theworld and made to do something out of their will. Where people are given aprice tag and are forced into lifestyle for someone else’s pleasure.

Peopleknow that almost every city has brothels, which increase the activity of humantrafficking but we still do nothing about it. People should discourage thoseactivities and should pay more attention to stop it. For instance such slogans that I created for my print can beused to advertise about the exploitation of humans through illegal trade.

Peoplefall into these traps because of poverty as they trick into these activities bypromising them good jobs and opportunities to life. Later, they are just takenaway and are forced to do what they want them to do. I truly feel that just byadvertising and creating slogans will make even a small difference that willhelp people make this world a better place.

Others have too often assertedthat human communities and organizations cannot be both unified and diverse.Indeed, some commentators claim that the one must be the enemy of the other.How is it then, that the Society of HumanKind is able to reconcile these twovery different principles of human social life?

The answer begins with anunderstanding of the Aim of the Society and the effort to maintain and promotethe social conditions that make an achievement of that Aim possible. The Dogmaof the Society sets out the social conditions required for the achievement ofthe Society's Aim. It asserts that if the human species can survive into theinfinite future under conditions that allow continuous growth in humanknowledge and skills, then humankind will discover a means to extend lifebeyond death. On that Dogmatic base the Aim of the Society of HumanKind is thendeveloped by the addition of a commitment by the Society to extend that newgained freedom from oblivion to all past and future generations of humanity.

Over the past couple decades, governments and the media havebeen constantly throwing the words global warming and climate change at us.They expect MY generation to do something about. So they go into classrooms,and teach about ways to change what’s happening instead of going out andchanging it themselves. What the system has taught students is that globalwarming is caused by a rise in greenhouse gases that trap the heat of the sunin the atmosphere, raising the temperature over a relatively short period oftime. This heating causes a lot of problems that are more worrisome than theactual temperature.

The rise in temperature has led to the melting of the icecaps and glaciers in particular. This melting of water from its solid form hasraised the levels of sea water and has messed up the ocean currents and thewater temperature. Several separate studies have found the average temperaturehave been increased my about 1 cm in the last 50 years; which is actually a bigrise. This messing up of the ocean can and is destroying marine ecosystems allaround the world. Soon there won’t be any coral reefs to marvel at or fishbecause the world around them is changing too fast for them to adapt.

Not only has global warming affected the ocean and itsinhabitants, but it also has affected the land animals as well. Too little rainin many parts of the world will lead to dehydration, starvation and death. Anexample would be the savanna in Africa. That biome has a very long dry season,and only a few months of water. If global warming persists, that dry seasoncould lengthen even more and many of the animals would die without the waterthey need.

As can be seen, many species are at risk of becomingendangered, and some are even going extinct because of the changing of theclimate too rapidly. The adults ofthis world have put it squarely on their children’s shoulders to fix thisproblem and that really isn’t fair. This problem should have been on the mendyears ago when it was first realized as to BEING a problem. Thegreat-grandchildren of Earth will have nothing to look forward to if globalwarming is not looked after now.

Depression is a sad facet of life. No one really considersdepression as an illness. To many, depression is just a feeling of sadness,unhappiness, or misery in the dumps; most of us feel this way at one time oranother for short periods. However, I say that depression is an emotionaldisorder in which feelings of sadness, loss, anger, or frustration interferewith everyday life for a longer period of time. Just because symptom ofdepression is not as clear as other “accepted” illnesses such as cancer andtyphoid, we cannot conclude that depression is just a lack of willingness andenthusiasm. Through my artwork, I want everyone to understand the actualmeaning of depression and treat depression with the same tolerance and compassionas accepted illnesses.

Recently, water wastage has become one of my major concerns.Every day I see people wasting water by keeping the tap running while theybrush, not closing the tap properly, taking extra long showers, etc. Through myprint, I wanted to spread the message that every drop is precious. The waterdrop has the image of a globe in it, showing that it is a global issue andeverybody needs to contribute in preserving water. I think the center of theimage with the hands that are almost holding the water drop speaks for itself.I carved the smaller hands in the corners to show what the consequence of waterwastage might be like in the future. Like the hands stretching out desperatelyfor the single drop, if we carry on wasting water, we will be in the samesituation.

John F. Kennedy once said, “Conformity is the jailer offreedom and the enemy of growth.” It is the nemesis of an individual, itconstricts and forces one to oblige to its directions. It instills fear in thehearts of individuals thereby erasing any possibility of retaliation. It trulyis the jailer of freedom and the enemy of growth.

Through my artwork, I wish to send a message of urgency, forindividuals to embrace their uniqueness. My artwork has an extremely bi-polarrepresentation of conformity: the darker colors engulf the conformers whoseexpressions are that of longing and ennui, whereas the cooler, lighter colorsdance around the calm, collected, individual who refuses to comply withsociety’s norm.

In modern society, most individuals are restricted by the expectationslaid on them by society. Society pushes these individuals to submit to itswill. The fear of repercussions immobilizes individuals from breaking free ofthe chains cast on them by society. Therefore, through my artwork, I urgepeople to work towards a better future and to stand and be firm in theirresolution; to break through society’s expectations and pursue their own goalswithout the burden of conformity.

Homosexuality has been a taboo in society for as long as wecan remember. Just recently, nations are recognizing the Lesbian, Gay,Bisexual, and, Transgender (LGBT) community. For centuries homosexuality hasbeen looked down upon and people were even killed for committing such“crimes.” Activists all around theworld have protested for equality among the LGBT community. Even though manycountries recognize homosexuality, homosexuals are forbidden to get married,adopt, apply for specific jobs, and basically they are forbidden to live normallives. Everyone deserves equality so why not the LGBT community?

Ichose to do this topic because I feel that this is an issue that is present inevery country. Countries should acknowledge homosexuals and not treat them asan outcast. I come from a very traditional family and so my parents dislike theidea of homosexuals because they think that it is against nature. This mindsetis slowly changing as our world changes everyday and maybe that is why Isupport the LGBT community. Although I am not an activist or a strongsupporter, I agree with the LGBT cause because everyone has the right to livetheir own lives as they want.

Human beings are all Homo sapiens no matter your race,background, gender, or sexuality. If we are all the same, discrimination shouldnot be present because we all belong to the same ancestors. Yet, the worldstill has major problems with discrimination. Homosexuals should be given theright that all humans have because in the end we are all the same. Law makersshould understand that the LGBT community does not harm anyone, so why forbidthem. It would be understandable if the LGBT community was posing a threat tothe others lives, but clearly they are not. People should stop thediscrimination against the LGBT community because each individual has the rightto make their own decisions about their own lives.

Tigers have been an endangered species for years now, andit’s not getting any better. For the past decade, numerous tigers have beenshot and killed for their well known attractive, warm, and soft, excellentquality fur. Their fur is used in households for their attractive designs. Itis also made and used as blankets and even coats. They say that the tiger furis one of the warmest as it can withstand the cold weather. Then another thingthat tigers are pouched for is for their teeth and claws. Their teeth makeimpeccable necklaces, pendants and even designs for shirts, hats and evenbracelets. The reason they are pouched is for the numerous and variousqualities like the fur and the teeth.

Tigers now days, are being used in circuses forentertainment and even in zoos. I would suggest that tigers should be placed ina wildlife sanctuary to prevent their extinction. Tigers are also a part of thelife cycle of the world. They are known to be worshipped in some religions anddevilish to others. They have been also known to be used in numerous films andmovies like Aladdin, Jungle Book, Tarzan and many more. They have been in ourmemories as great heroes when we were kids. This is also the reason why I alsochose to make the tiger printmaking.

I chose the tiger as it is one of the most endangeredanimals in the world, like the white tiger/ Bengal tiger of India. I chose thetiger as it is common and everyone knows about it, but not much care about thembeing endangered. I chose thetiger also to represent every other cat like species that are extinct, like thePuma. The tiger is cool and a beauty of nature. Just like any other livingthing, I think they have the right to live peacefully.

The theme of my artworks is “Deforestation”. The reason Ichose this theme is because one of the world’s current issue is globalwarming. Global warming occursbecause people are cutting down trees, which causes negative effects on the environment.In my artworks, I compare the cutting down of trees as cutting the earth inhalf. This is because I wanted people to know that trees are the heart of ourearth, if we’re destroying trees, we’re destroying our earth as well.Basically, mankind will never be able to live on without trees, so let’s “SAVETHE WORLD, STOP DEFORESTATION.”

My artwork is protesting two different issues that are allconnected. First it addresses the issue of the increasing amount ofinfluence that television has over people. Americans spend hours a daywatching TV and it influences their thoughts, actions and lifestyle. MostTV shows are mindless entertainment meant simply to keep masses of peopleoccupied so they can be fed advertisements. I have chosen to show this ina negative light by comparing the public to sheep. The image of a sheepbrings to mind a stupid herd animal. A sheep does not think for itself; insteadit unquestioningly follows whatever is in front of it weather that is anothersheep or in this case a TV. The TV itself is set above the sheep shiningdown on them as if it were the authority imposing its will on itssubjects.
Another trait that is associatedwith sheep is their lack of individuality which is the second issue addressedby my piece. Social standards, mass media, fashion, self consciousnessand in some cases school, all diminish a person’s uniqueness until they becomejust a small part of the massive system we call society. Similarly, sheepare nearly identical and are merely interchangeable parts of a herd. Theuse of sheep also comes with another strong symbol, the black sheep. Theblack sheep is the opposite of the white sheep and represents an outsider inthe group and an individual who will think independently. The black sheep in this image is shown rejectingthe group and the authority by tuning away form the TV. The term blacksheep is sometimes applied to people with a negative connotation. Thisimage shows it in a positive way but it also gives the viewer a way out of theimage. Calling people dumb sheep may call attention to the issue, but byincluding the black sheep, I give people a way out of the image. It islike saying, if you don’t want to be a dumb sheep just think for yourself andwalk away.

Studio 1: Abstract Stool Series

After refreshing their value and proportion skills with the still-life project, the Studio 1 students created a series of drawings. The first was a reductive charcoal drawing, which was created by covering the paper with charcoal and using an eraser as the primary drawing instrument. Next, they created oil pastel drawings using complementary colors. The last drawing was by far the hardest - a study of neutral color mixing with watercolor pencils.

The Studio 1 Classes began the semester with a variety of observational drawing exercises. After a focused study on contour lines and value shading, they created traditional still-life drawings with pencil. The results are quite impressive!

Independence Day Textile Exhibit

To celebrate India's Independence, Woodstock arranged for an exhibition on Indian textiles. Staff and students enjoyed the opportunity to see demonstrations on spinning, weaving, embroidering, and block-printing.

The Woodstock Art Department is off to a great start to the 2011-2012 school year! This year, we have a few exciting changes.

1) We have two new art teachers: Ms. Katie Erickson and Ms. Rebecca Layton. You can find more information about them on the "Meet the Teachers" page.
2) We also have a new art room! The Senior School now has two rooms: the existing one on the top floor of the Media Center and a new one on the ground floor of the Media Center (old Study Hall room). It is great to see the program grow!
3) Lastly, thanks to more art teachers and better space, we are offering more classes to students. Mostly, we have increased the number of sections to existing courses. Additionally, we are offering a new Digital Media course in the spring.

Design: Logo and Sign-board

The Design class was presented with a unique opportunity to design a logo for a new shop in Mussoorie. The students competed and we came up with two winners: InHyuk won the logo design and Yangla's suggestion of "Mountain Roots" for a shop name was chosen.

InHyuk worked extremely hard to paint the sign board for the shop.

The busy streets of India fascinate me. Initially, my idea was to portray the 24-hour traffic congestion that is commonplace in India. However, as I progressed in developing my idea, I began to include imagery of people who also crowd the streets . I have used watercolor as my primary medium.

Jaza will be attending California College of Art.

To commemorate my last year at high school, I decided to make a

personal portfolio of 12 portraits of teenagers. As I am leaving

for a new life in college, this is a

preparation of letting go of some unpleasant memories

and the little girl inside me. I hope that when I grow older, these

paintings will be there to remind me of the good old days and

serve as a frame of my memories that I have gathered.
